It has, since its inception in the late 1940s, provided a powerful tool for the structural study of a wide variety of solids ranging from simple elements like hydrogen to complex materials like the biomolecules found in living organisms. As a consequence of its increasing complexity and broader application it has become a powerful tool in many fields such as medicine, agriculture, geology, materials science, radiation chemistry, and forensics. By matching Bragg’s Law (a series of angles are found in which radiation of certain wavelength can be diffracted by a crystal) with the three-dimensional atomic structure of a crystal, X-ray diffraction provides detailed information about crystal structure and the arrangement of atoms in the crystal. The most common source of X-ray radiation is X-ray tubes, where electrons are accelerated in an electric field and collide with a metal target giving off X-rays. Since a metal target will cause overheating problems, ceramic targets or rotating tubes with rotating anodes are commonly used for X-ray radiation generation. X-ray radiation is collimated with optical devices called X-ray optics to produce a beam of a very narrow cross section. One of the most common optical elements is the X-ray monochromator, an optical device which collimates X-ray radiation and can separate its spectra. Monochromators are also used as the X-ray source for X-ray diffraction. The X-ray radiation then travels through the body of the crystal to be studied and is diffracted, or scattered, by the atoms in the crystal lattice. Diffraction occurs because the atoms in the crystal lattice are a macroscopic distance from the X-ray source and therefore generate scattered radiation with an orientation parallel to the incident beam. The scattered radiation is then measured with a detector and analyzed to determine the crystal structure and arrangement of the atoms in the crystal.
