The program ran on a single Macintosh computer. It was invented by Herb Reed and Michael Graves, two college friends who attended the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). In the early 1980s, they were working together at a startup company named CopyLands, Inc. (with an actual office in Santa Cruz.) The first version of the program was released in 1983. The program ran in version 1.1 on a Macintosh 7300 computer, and ran on three Macs in the CopyLands office.
